Integrated Nutrition Security Intervention Zambia (SEWOH) Project.
Background: The Integrated Nutrition Security Intervention project (SEWOH) runs from 2016 to 2020 with support from partners Kinder-Not-Hilfe – Germany. The overall goal of the project is to contribute to improving health and nutrition status of child bearing women and children under the age of 5 in two districts of Zambia’s Central and Northern Province, Kapiri Mposhi and Mporokoso district respectively. The two provinces have been targeted due to high levels of stunting among children.
Achievement and Impact: In Mporokoso (now Lunte District) District the project is currently supporting more than 5,500 children under 5 and 2,750 pregnant and lactating women with nutrition programmes in line with 1000 Most Critical Days Programme which is a national programme spearheaded by National Food and Nutrition Commission of Zambia. The project is also contributing towards the setup and building capacity of community and district nutrition structures (Neighbourhood Health Committee – NHC, Community Health Workers -CHW and District Nutrition Coordinating Committees – DNCC) in the two district to coordinate nutrition programmes and ensure sustainable impact. The project is further improving the agriculture and livestock production, preservation of food and utilization by empowering the target households with the skills through the nutrition groups that have been formed. The project has been mobilizing community leaders and members to raise awareness nutrition for children and pregnant and lactating women and community structures have been supported with bicycles, sensitization materials for nutrition and other tools in their work.
